How till slip data helped a major FMCG brand lift sales

A major FMCG brand, left unnamed here as in the original account, was stuck. Sales had flattened, repeat purchases were falling, and the promotions were generic enough that people ignored them. Competition was not waiting. The brand needed a picture of what people actually bought.
What was going wrong
- Sales were declining, and fewer people were coming back.
- There was little visibility of what people bought, or how often.
- Campaigns were not personal, so engagement and conversion stayed soft.
- Rivals, established and new, were taking the space a generic offer could not hold.
What they did with the slips
Smartslip.ai was added to the promotions they already ran. Shoppers sent till slips on WhatsApp and in a branded app, from stores across the estate. That produced a volume of real baskets rather than a survey.
The analysis, read in SmartInsights, covered what was bought together, how often, and the seasonal pattern. Shoppers were grouped by habit, and the promotions were scored by which offer actually moved sales.
What changed
- Frequent buyers got exclusive discounts and loyalty rewards, not the national blast.
- Promotions moved onto the products with the most headroom, and onto the weeks people were already buying.
- The next message matched a preference the slip had already shown.
The result
- 15%Revenue up during the campaign. Personal offers converted, and people bought again.
- 25%Participation up. Relevant content got more people into the promotion.
- 20%Repeat purchases up. Tailored offers turned a one-off into a habit.
The same data shaped product placement and the next brief, not only this one. Till slips, read properly, were the difference between a promotion that hoped and a promotion that knew.
