SASKO Siyasizana: Helping everyday purchases support local schools

A loaf of bread is part of everyday life. SASKO’s Siyasizana campaign gave that purchase another purpose by inviting customers to help schools in their communities.
The promotion connected qualifying SASKO purchases with school nominations for playground upgrades. Smartslip.ai powered the receipt-validation part of the WhatsApp experience, helping shoppers turn a routine purchase into participation in a community campaign.
The brief
SASKO wanted to encourage purchases of its bakery products while creating a benefit that customers could care about beyond their own household. Schools and playgrounds gave the campaign a clear local focus.
Parents, teachers and community members had a reason to take part that was easy to understand: support a school they knew through a qualifying purchase.
From the bread aisle to a school nomination
Customers bought participating SASKO loaves, buns or rolls and submitted their till slips through WhatsApp. Smartslip.ai validated the purchases as part of a journey that supported school nominations and voting.
The experience brought the purchase check and community participation into one place. The campaign team could track valid entries and activity, while shoppers could follow a familiar messaging conversation.
For us, the role of the technology was practical. The receipt needed to be checked so participation could be tied to the campaign’s purchase requirement. The school nomination gave that entry its meaning.
The results
Siyasizana received nearly 47,000 valid entries and generated more than 1.2 million WhatsApp messages. It reached 160% of its unique-user target, exceeding that target by 60%.
The scale of the conversation reflected a campaign with several steps, from receipt submission to community participation. It also showed how a purchase-based promotion could carry a message that people wanted to act on.
Siyasizana gave SASKO a way to connect its everyday products with a visible community ambition. Customers had a simple route into the campaign, and the platform supported the checks and participation needed behind the scenes.
